Smithy Fold House is located in the green belt of the South Yorkshire countryside near to Wortley village. The existing house was a historic barn conversion with an added extension wing. The house felt pieced together and not designed as one. The ceilings are low and windows very small. The ground floor layout was largely as it would have been as an animal barn, stalls, store rooms, and thick separating stone walls. Not the dream of a modern home owner. With the greenbelt all around and plenty of space to play with, we opened the house up and reorientated the views. Starting with a new entrance. The original entrance was through a small porch to the rear of the house. The new design boasts a two storey glazed gable wall, overlooking acres of greenbelt countryside, in a style that is contemporary but sensitive to the original dwelling. Instead of a hidden entrance walk to the rear of the house, they can now arrive and be welcomed by the house, drawn in through the centre of the front elevation. This included a new front lawn landscape with entrance steps and path. The entrance hall is two storeys high, with original oak beam trusses retained to accentuate the height and remain sensitive to the original barn. The new staircase invites you upstairs to the remodelled bedroom wings.
The windows sills have been lowered to allow for more light into the ground floor rooms. The kitchen wing has been opened up with all the dividing walls removed to create a contemporary take on the countryside kitchen. The rear wing has been reimagined to provide an entertainment space, that opens up through an oak framed rear extension onto the BBQ and patio outside. The oak framed extension and archway allow for light to pour in
